This is a video cut from “Trick of The Mind” series aired in the UK. The clip here is taken directly from Season 1 — Episode 1.

This is one of my favorite segments done by Derren. It explains for the most part how he did achieve the feat, and the trick is quite clever. Don’t get too hung up on the ending though; it’s merely a trick.

I’ve got all of Derren’s work on my computer, and if you’re interested in somehow obtaining the information, email me at tranceriver@gmail.com and we’ll talk.

Cheers

    He said he’d …
He said he’d studied all their games. High-level chess players play a LOT of games and routinely record them. Brown probably took an average, maybe adjusting it according to the players’ records in games against each other.

    actually no, I play …
actually no, I play tournament chess and go over grandmaster games and to be honest I don’t know what most of them look like, you just know their names and the games they play

    @monkeytwineball
mm not really an answer but I hope it’s some smart mnemonic trick or so. A “switching the envelope trick when nobody sees it” would just be too lame, imho.

    Anyone have a …
Anyone have a theory on the numbers he picked out?
    Slight of hand I guess?

  • kfetter16 says:

    lol wait are you …
lol wait are you saying he ‘cheated’ like it’s some new information? he says in the video that he did not play, that they in fact played each other, that he did not win but they won/lost against one another. he is not trying to make us think that he’s brilliant and can beat a grandmaster, if he was he wouldnt have had his explanation at the end.

  • kfetter16 says:

    lol ‘i genuinely …
lol ‘i genuinely can’t remember’ XD way to leave us hanging!! brilliant tho. good way to look like an amazing chess player, funny how they were just playing each other. love it!

I knew he was that by the half time of the vid its pretty cool.lol wow I need to do that!!

  • chess0112358 says:

    The only problem …
The only problem with this is that in typical simultaneous displays, the person playing the multiple games does not wait to see the response of the seated player before he moves on. The seated players particpating would know something was up if the player doing the simultaneous would wait to see the seated player’s move before he moved on. Still this is kinda cool.
